Monument Bridge Club In the matter of a few months, the Bridge community in Limerick has lost four people who made huge contributions to the development of the game in Limerick and especially in the Monument Bridge Centre. The most recent loss is Stephen Cleary, President of the Monument Bridge Club from 1983-85. When I came to Limerick, Stephen was one of the Tournament Directors who ran the Open Pairs at the Limerick Congress in Cruises Hotel. A sense of humour and calmness are key attributes of a Tournament Director and Stephen had lots of both. Work commitments meant that Stephen had to reduce his involvement with bridge although his wife Aine continued to play. Noel Hickey and his wife Angela were ́two of the promising players that emerged in that era. Noel went on to win three National titles and won lots of local competitions. Noel became a member of the Monument Bridge Club Committee and was very involved in the search for and acquisition of Hamilton House, Roxboro Road, as the home of the Monument Bridge Club in 1988. Noel served as President of the Monument from 2005-07. Another who served on the Committee at that time was Oliver Creighton who served as Secretary of the Monument Bridge Club for quite a few years. At about this time, Michael Holmes took over as Treasurer of the Monument from Gerard Fulham. Michael’s careful management of the finances allowed improvements to be made to the Centre. Additionally, Michael also contributed to the ambience in the centre by his provision of beautiful flower arrangements. On special occasions such as Christmas parties, the premises would be filled with colour and fragrance thanks to Michael’s efforts. All four have passed away in such a short time with no real chance for their friends to mark their contributions. It is important that when things revert to normal, players will have the opportunity to express their gratitude for the huge contributions these four have made.
